How to choose hangings and furniture-covering
To some extent, the styles and characteristics of your hangings and furniture-coverings are determined more or less by the amount you can afford for them. According to your personal taste,you can choose silk or velvet for formal rooms; velvets, corduroys or cotton for living-rooms; thin silks and cotton for bedrooms; cotton for nurseries, breakfast-rooms and porches.
If your furniture is classy, exquisite in quality, line and color, hangings and covers must accord. Genuine antiques requst good silks for table covers. If these are all you have,you can add an interesting cover or cushion. Nothing in the world gives such a note of distinction to a room as the use of rare, old silks, properly placed.
If you don’t own antique silk,you can use the reproductions which can also satisfy your eyes and improve in tone with age.If you own only some small pieces of antique silk, masterly combine several small bits,or you can make a square of it for the centre of the table.
If the staple upholstery is of cotton, then at once your room becomes more or less informal.In America, slip-covers of cotton are used in formal rooms; but are removed when the owner is entertaining. If you are planning the living-room for a small house or apartment, which must serve as sitting room during the winter months, far more noble, and some dignity can be obtained for the same expenditure, by using plain velveteen, modern silk brocades in one color, or some of the modern tapestry to be had in very intelligent shades of all colors.
In England the term cotton includes cretonne and stamped linen. The fashion for cretonne and cotton has led to their indiscriminate use by professionals as well as amateurs, and this craze has caused a prejudice against them. Cotton used with judgment can be most attractive. If you are planning for them, put together, for consideration, all your bright colored cotton, and in quite another part of your room, or decorator's shop, the cotton of dull, faded colors, as they require different treatment.
