The hospital bag is packed and waiting next to the door. The nursery is ready, diapers and powders on call near the changing table and tiny outfits neatly folded in the dresser. Baby will be here any day. Yet, it takes more than one sies and bottles to prepare for a newborn. Here are five things a parent should know before bringing baby home.

1. The Crib

Crib bedding sets often come with a fluffy comforter and matching bumper. Yet babies under the age of one can easily be suffocated by blankets, thick bumpers, and even plush toys. All baby needs is a tight-fitting sheet, a warm outfit, and a swaddling blanket. Some pediatricians recommend avoiding a bumper altogether since it is merely decorative. Also be sure that the crib bars are no more than 2 1/8 inches apart and that the mattress fits snugly inside the crib. When baby comes home, remember to always put him to sleep on his back.

2. The Changing Table

Invest in a changing table with protective railings at least several inches taller than the changing pad. The pad should have sturdy straps. Be sure to always strap baby onto the table while changing him. Keep a well stocked supply of diapers and wipes nearby so you won't have to step away for even a moment. Baby should never be left unattended on the table, as even the youngest infant can inadvertently and unexpectedly roll off.

3. Bottles

Purchase bottles that are BPA free. BPA is a chemical that may be linked to human growth and reproductive issues. Never microwave a bottle of formula, as microwaving bottles can lead to uneven heating and possibly burn baby's mouth. Wash bottles and nipples thoroughly after use and never use a bottle of formula that has been left out longer than 2 hours.

4. Bath

Infant seats are helpful when bathing baby, but don't be fooled into thinking it is a safety measure that will prevent all accidents. A baby must never be farther than arms reach while bathing and must be constantly supervised. Set your house's water heater to 120 degrees or less to prevent scalding, or install an anti-scald device. It is a good idea to get your towels, diapers, and other supplies ready before bath time.

5. Used Baby Equipment

Second-hand baby equipment is less expensive or even free, but it can also be dangerous. Check the Consumer Product Safety Commission to be sure your used car seat, stroller, crib, or toys have not been recalled. Toys that are several decades old may contain lead paint and should be avoided. When it comes to car seats, never buy a used seat if you don't know its history. It may be unreliable if it has been in a crash. Don't by a seat that is more than 6 years old, doesn't have an instruction manual, or is missing parts. Although they can be expensive, a car seat is one baby item you should consider buying new.

If there's a need - a real one or just a perceived one - you can count on some company somewhere to create a product to meet it at a profit. It will probably be a technological solution. Our age is in love with technology. And the profit will be as big as possible. Maybe a drug will also be patented for that need and be sold everywhere ? that drug may even work. But that's another article.

When it comes to a need, hundreds of thousands of people world-wide say that they don't get enough good sleep. And reams of studies from researchers of all kinds seem to back them up.

The Japanese electronics giant Matsushita decided that the ideal solution was a technical one, and their solution was the "perfect sleeping room." They put their designers and engineers to work. Here's what they came up with.

The Technological Solution

It's like something out of science fiction. There's a giant TV screen and a control panel on the wall. The walls are thick sound-absorbing material.

There's music. Most of it is gentle guitar or piano music. There are sounds of a brook, with birds in the background.

The bed probably doesn't look like your bed at home. It's upright like a giant recliner or a hospital bed. The TV screen, over the dresser, is aligned to be directly in your line of sight.

After you've sat in the bed for a while, the room starts to do its thing. The lights dim. The screen goes dark. All sound except the brook die away as the back of the bed lowers you into sleeping position.

The bed begins to massage you. This is not one of those cheap motel devices where you put in a coin and for five minutes of vibration. This is gentle and concentrated on your upper and lower back.

After a while the massage stops. The room goes completely dark.

Air is released from the mattress. Your body settles deeper into it.

According to the people at Matsushita, everyone who has tried the system has fallen asleep. Sounds good, but there's no track record of people who've had a system for any length of time.

That could have something to do with the price. If you want the "perfect sleeping room," Matsushita-style, it will cost you $30,000.

Do It Yourself

That's an awful lot of money for a system that might or might not give you a good night's sleep. And what happens if the system goes on the blink? Do you have to send it out for warranty repairs? If so, now you're dependent on it like a drug, how do you sleep until then?

That all makes no sense to me. Instead, try some low-tech, low-cost things that we know will help you sleep better.

A Good Foundation

Good mattresses aren't cheap these days. That may be why most people keep them far too long.

According to the British Sleep Council, most people hold on to a bed for almost twenty years. By then a bed is just a lump of tired and old rags with metal springs.

When you get a new bed, make sure you get one that's big enough. The Furniture Industry Research Organization says that 80 percent of Britons sleep on standard double bed, which is not big enough to be comfortable.

With a bed that size, sleeping with another person, you have as much relative room to move as a baby in a crib. Get a bed that's at least 5 feet 6 inches wide. It should be at least 6 feet 6 inches long, too, unless one of you is really tall and you need something longer.

A Cool, Dark, Quiet Place

Light is a signal to your body to wake up. So keep light out.

Police officers and others who have to sleep during the day have been known to nail sleeping bags over the windows. You don't need that. Quality lined drapes will do a better job and not make it seem like you're sleeping in a youth hostel.

If you've got an alarm clock with a bright display, turn it off or at least down. Turn off other lights or displays that might affect your sleep.

And keep your sleeping room cool. The general rule is that cooler is better, but stay above 12 degrees Celsius. Keep cool but comfortable.

You won't be able to do much about the noise outside your room unless you move. But you can do some things inside.

Those good curtains I mentioned will help keep noise out. There's a technological solution, too.

"White noise" is noise made up of all the available frequencies. Practically, "white noise" is used to mask background noise and sounds.

An inexpensive white noise generator can do the trick. So can a small fan that runs while you sleep. The unobtrusive fan noise will mask other, more annoying noises.

Scent and Feel

Where you're sleeping also involves the material of everything you're sleeping on.

Pick natural fibers for whatever you wear to bed. They absorb moisture well and breathe better than synthetic fabrics.

For a little extra relaxation help, try a natural lavender scent. Research shows it can improve the quality of sleep. Naturally lavender-scented ironing sprays are a good solution.

Your sleeping room is only part of the formula for great sleep. And, the "Perfect Sleep Room" is an expensive, high-tech solution. But it may not work as well some simpler, easier and less expensive ways to create your own perfect sleep room.

Environmental versus psychological

Everything in this report deals with the external surrounds for where you are sleeping. Personally, it's my belief that all these are nothing more than training wheels on a bicycle.

It's great to get you started, but one day you need to progress beyond it.

The real key to sleeping anywhere and anytime is to learn to flip the sleep switches inside your mind and body. Once you learn that, you'll be able to fall asleep on a bus, plane, foreign hotel bed ? even with a partner snoring next to you like a drowning water buffalo.

A monumental time in the life of any toddler is moving from the crib or child's bed to a real "grown up" bed. Consider choosing a loft bed for your growing youngster, especially if the room he or she occupies is small for much else than a bed or shared with a sibling. However, before you move your child to any bed other than a crib, ensure he or she is at least two years of age and no less than 35 inches tall. If your child is a late bloomer or showing no interest in moving up to a larger bed, allow him or her a certain amount of leeway in regards to switching to a "big boy" or "big girl" bed.

Many parents choose to invest in a loft bed for their child because another child has arrived, is on the way, or currently occupies the house. A loft is a great way to give each child his or her space without having to sacrifice floor space for child's play. Also, a loft bed is a great way to entice your son or daughter to leave your bed in exchange for something a great deal cooler in their eyes.

One thing to keep in mind when choosing a loft bed for a young child is to avoid the ceiling scraping beds and instead choose lofts that are no taller than four feet. This is especially true if you are dealing with a youngster who may have a slight fear of heights, since everything is taller to a child. A four foot loft still allows a great amount of room underneath the bed and can be arranged to house a fantastic fort, tent, or enclosed space that is only for the child. Some children's furniture manufacturers are even including specialized loft beds into their furniture designs that are sure to tickle your child's imagination.

Another critical aspect to keep in mind is the safety of the loft. Ensure the guard rails are stable and properly placed on the bed. Furthermore, ensure both sides of the bed come equipped with guard rails. Quite often, children can become trapped or even fall out of the bed if two guard rails are not present on the bed. Also, check out the ladder to make sure your child will be safe while entering and exiting his or her bed. Furthermore, ensure the ladder is correctly installed on the bed to prevent any accidents or injuries due to improper equipment.

Once your child has made the move into a loft bed, make time to speak with your son or daughter regarding safety. Set rules for entering and exiting the bed and ensure your children will not play or roughhouse, which can call potentially cause injury.

The crib is the most important constituent in any nursery. It has to be made really safe and cozy. Following the recall of more than a million of Delta Enterprise Inc.'s cribs, parents have been stricken with panic and worry about the safety of their infants.

The recall is expected to affect millions of families and included a recall of 1.6 million potentially faulty cribs, according to a Chicago Tribune special investigation. While the 1.6 million cribs are not on the market any longer, many cribs are resold or passed down through families, according to the Chicago Tribune. The faulty cribs were produced from 1995 to 2007 from Delta, which has been deemed the largest distributor of cribs worldwide.

Although the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Delta noted that the recall stemmed from the deaths of two infants who were asphyxiated following the malfunction of the drop side of the crib, on a closer investigation by the Chicago Tribune, the company had an alleged lengthy history of crib malfunctions.

Crib Safety Tips

The dangers associated with faulty cribs can be avoided or reduced, according to the CPSC, by abiding by the following list of crib safety tips:

* Place infants on their backs and ensure that the crib is fitted with a tight-fitting mattress.

* Pillows, comforters, sheepskins, bumper pads, blankets and toys should not be placed within the crib.

* Consider replacing blankets with sleepers.

* Place a tucked in blanket as well as baby?s feet at foot of bed and do not place blanket higher than infant?s chest.

* A fitted sheet designed for a crib mattress should be the only one used.

The American Academy of Pediatricians (AAP) have also developed a set of standards to ensure safety among infants. The AAP developed the following list to assist parents in choosing the safest crib for their child.

* A Juvenile Product Manufacturers Association (JPMA) certification should be provided with the crib.

* Slats should not be widely spaced, no more than 2 and 3/8 inches.

* Ensure that wooden cribs do not contain splinters and that all joints fit precisely together.

* Crib surfaces should contain lead-free paint and surfaces should be smooth with no cracks or peeling paint.

* Avoid decorative cutouts on the end panels.

* Corner posts should either be very tall or flush with the end panels.

* Cribs that have been lowered should reach at least 9 inches about the mattress support while cribs raised all the way should be a minimum of 26 inches above the mattress support.

* The mattress should be the same size as a crib in order to avoid trapped limbs or body parts.

* There should be a hand-operated, locking drop side that does not unintentionally release.
