Once your bring your newborn home from the hospital for the first time you may feel frightened. All the responsiblities you face with your new baby can be overwhelming. Before you bring your baby home you will want to make sure you have gotten and installed correctly their new car seat. Installing their car seat improperly is dangerous to your child's safety. So installing it properly the first time insures your peace of mind when transporting your newborn.

To avoid any possible dangers check out your babies crib for proper installation. Make sure the crib mattress fits securely without any gapes for them to get wedged in. Do not leave the rail down on their crib when you are out of the room. Never leave your newborn alone and sleeping in their crib with toys, pillows, or blankets that could fall over their face and smother them. Make sure the sheet bedding fits snugly and securely. Your newborn should sleep on their back on a firm mattress. Make sure your baby is not left alone with any objects or toys in their crib. Monitors are a good tool for listening for baby when you are not in the same room. It enables you to hear any changes in their sleeping and breathing patterns as well as coughing or choking.

There are many possible dangers in your home that could be a threat to your babies safety. Your newborn will grow and change quickly and will be more susceptible to the new dangers in your home. Don't ever leave your baby alone for even a second when changing them. Their quick movement could cause them to fall and injure themselves. They will start to reach for everything so do not leave any heavy objects or cords of any kind in their reach. In no time at all your baby will be scooting and crawling on the floor. Electric outlet covers should be used on electrical outlets to insure there is no danger of electrocution. Your smoke detector should be checked monthly to make sure it is working.

There are some other things you can do to protect your baby from dangers in your home. Locks for your all your cabinets is a must to prevent your little one from getting into harmful or poisonous supplies. These locks can be obtained from your local hardware or department store. Once your baby starts to pull up and climb, window locks are another good tool for keeping babies safe and secure from intruders as well as from open windows that they could fall through. Always have your infant strapped in their highchair at all times to prevent accidental falls from climbing out or slipping in their seat. Safety gates work well to keep your baby safe from stairways, porches and decks. They are helpful to confine your baby into small areas for their playtime and for watching them closely. Your babies safety needs will change in their environment as they grow.

Bringing your little bundle of joy home from the hospital is a big event and can also be a little scary. But it is just a matter of being well prepared and then keeping alert to any signs that your newborn is having any problems. If any symptoms occur, call your doctor immediately.

Most new mothers fret about what baby will wear on the trip home but forget that they will also need to be prepared for the trip as well. Make sure you have a comfortable, loose fitting outfit as you aren't likely to be able to wear the clothes you wore before you were pregnant. Pants with an elastic waistband or drawstring are a good option. Bring some roomy shoes that will be loose as your feet may be swollen. Now that you are ready, make sure you do not overdress your baby for the trip home. In warm weather the baby will need a light blanket because they do not regulate their body temperature very well yet and they get cold or warm more easily. If is it quite warm clothing your baby wears could be a t-shirt with diaper or some other appropriate warm weather outfit. Remember, your newborn will wiggle a lot so make the outfit something you can put on him with ease. If the weather is cold, again dress in appropriate clothing and cover baby with a heavier blanket. The size needed is unknown before your baby is born; you can bring outfits in preemie sizes and zero to size three.

The car seat should be installed before you bring baby home. Follow the instructions and then get it checked out by a qualified technician. Check the padding on the sides of the car seat. It needs to be thick enough to support your newborn's head. You can use a muslin cloth to support the baby's head is necessary; roll it up and put on the side so his head doesn't droop too much, although some drooping is normal. Thick blankets should not be used as your baby could suffocate. You might like to ride in the backseat with your baby, but leave him in the car seat. Never drive yourself home from the hospital. Have your husband, a friend or a family member drive you. You may still be tried and lacking your normal strength. Maybe you didn't get a lot of sleep while in the hospital.

Get the baby's crib or bassinet ready before you go to the hospital. Wash the sheets and make up the baby bed. Have two sizes of diapers at home already. You don't want to expose your newborn to germs by taking him into a store to buy diapers. Make sure to have any important phone numbers posted or programmed into your phone before you get home with your baby. These include your pediatrician and the emergency room. If you will breast feed have your lactation support phone numbers handy too.

It is a good idea to ask a friend ahead of time to be prepared to go shopping for you in case you forgot any essentials you will need. If you can, have someone cook dinner for you for several nights after you arrive home. This way you'll eat better as you'll tire more easily at first. Otherwise, planning ahead having some meals made that you can pop out of the freezer, thaw and heat up is a great way to go.

As a Mom-to-Be it can be overwhelming registering and shopping for your new baby!  Many moms ask "What do I really need?!"  Mommy-Central surveyed many of its moms and here are the top 15 "must have" baby supplies every mom should have BEFORE the baby comes home!

Diapers - Buy them in advance!  It seems so simple but many moms go home with just a few leftovers that the hospital gave them.  For newborns, Mommy-Central recommends Pampers Swaddlers for newborns. Wipes - this goes hand in hand with the diapers!  It's best to start off with the unscented sensitive wipes because your new baby's skin is delicate and sensitive. Boppy - The Boppy is great from day one!  New moms  can use it for support when breastfeeding or as an arm support for those with a bottle.  For there its uses are endless...you can prop the baby on it to play games, use it to strengthen neck muscles, assist the baby when learning to sit, and more! Sleep Sac - get 2-3 "sleep sacs" for your baby's pajamas.  They have sleeves and the bottom is a zippers sac, so you don't have to mess with leg holes or snaps in the middle of the night. Receiving blankets - these multi-purpose blankets are great for swaddling newborns (ask the hospital to show you how to swaddle). Breast pump - if you plan to pump your breast milk its best to get your pump before the baby is born.  Lactation consultants at the hospital can  help you get started on your pump. Foot stool - Having a small foot stool is extremely helpful for your back when you are sitting down to feed your baby - bottle or breast! Crib/bassinet - there are lots of options when you bring a baby home on where they will sleep.  Whatever you decide, make sure you have the sheets washed and the bed made before you leave for the hospital. Crib sheets - Have 2-3 crib or bassinet sheets on hand.  You don't want to be doing laundry in the middle of the night when your baby spits up or their diaper has a "blow-out"...it will happen! Changing pad cover -  Have 2 changing pad covers on hand.  Again you don't want to have to wash the changing pad cover immediately every time there is an accident! Burp cloths - Have 5-10 burp cloths on hand because you'll need them for post baby feedings and spit-up.  It's a good idea to keep them stashed in a few places around the house so you aren't constantly running to the nursery. Baby shampoo/body wash - how much you bathe your baby is up to you.  Most doctors recommend at birth 1-2 baths per week.  If your baby loves the bath, just do a bath with no soap! Hooded towel - a great deal of heat escapes from a baby's head & they easily get cold (this is why you always wash their hair last).  Be sure to have hooded baby towels for after the bath! T-shirts or side-snap shirts - It's great to have a few of these "non-onsie" shirts especially for the first week or two before the baby's umbilical cord falls off. Hand Sanitizer - it's important that your baby doesn't get sick the first few weeks of life.  You'll likely have lots of people wanting to visit so keep a bottle of Purell handy so you keep the germs away!

As the birth of your baby quickly approaches, it's easy to get caught up in the plethora of daily activities and just as easily to overlook some of the essential baby items which will make your child's first days home easy. By slowly purchasing your infant's items before your due date, you'll be able to avoid overlooked items by reviewing your purchases while having plenty of time to procure any forgotten baby goods. Making the transition home from the hospital can be quite pleasing as long as you have a few essential items.

 

Above all else, you must have a rear-facing car seat. Your baby will not be allowed to leave the hospital without one. It is not necessary to immediately have a stroller to bring your baby home though you may want to consider looking into baby travel systems which provide the required infant car seat and also a stroller which you’ll later need.

 

Often overlooked by many parents is the value of babywearing. Research has shown that the use of baby wrap and sling-style carriers that keep baby close to mom or dad offer many benefits to the baby’s development. Although these types of carriers are not crucial to baby's arrival day, many parents find it beneficial to begin as soon as possible.

 

You’ll need to have a place for your newborn to sleep once the baby arrives home. A crib or bassinet and a couple of sets of bedding will be needed. As a bassinet provides a more compact space to which newborns are accustomed and a crib offers roomier for mobility baby's growth, many parents choose to purchase both a crib and a bassinet for their baby. In several weeks to a few months, after your infant has become more acquainted with the outside world, he or she can more comfortably sleep in the crib.

 

Receiving blankets are excellent for swaddling your baby, as newborns have a difficult time regulating their body temperature. They also come in handy when there's spit-up after a burping. Tightly wrapping your newborn in a receiving blanket offers a comforting sleep at night time and during the day.

 

Every newborn seems to have an endless appetite and pre-planning for proper feeding is very important. Many of the feeding accessories you need will depend on your choice of breast or formula feeding. In either case, you’ll need some basic items such as bibs, burping cloths and bottles – even with breastfeeding, many mom’s like to store some breast milk for future feedings or letting dad enjoy some feeding time with baby.  For formula feeding, you’ll want to make sure you have at least a couple of weeks of formula prior to baby’s arrival. If choosing to breastfeed, you should consider purchasing a breast pump and nursing pads to comfort sensitive nipples.

 

For your baby's arrival, you'll also need to have plenty of diapers at home. It's likely that your baby may need a dozen diaper changes each day. You’ll need to determine whether you want to use cloth diapers or disposables. Disposables are the easiest to use but can cost you quite a bit of money over the years you will spend changing diapers. One-size cloth diapers are also easy to purchase and use, but you’ll also need diaper inserts with them. With either option, you’ll need to also have plenty of baby wipes on-hand, changing pad, diaper rash cream, and baby powder.

 

Basic baby health care items your child will be important to have upon arriving home. A newborn or infant first aid kit, which includes a nasal aspirator, thermometer, and toenail clippers, among other things, is one such item. Be sure to have a baby bathtub, baby shampoo, lotion and hooded towels for a complete bath time experience.

 

Though baby toys can be extremely fun to pick out, generally, your baby won’t need many toys during the first couple of months, but there are a few worth having upon arrival. Invaluable to your baby's enjoyment are toys which can stimulate his or her senses. It's to begin stimulating your baby's development. Baby's stresses of his or her new living environment can be soothed with the calming sounds of a stuffed toy or mobile that plays soft music.

 

By covering all of the essentials, you and your baby will find the transition home enjoyable. With a proper understanding as to what's important for baby's first few weeks at home, you'll be able to better plan his or her arrival and reduce your stress. Most importantly, you need to remember that this should be a special event for the entire family so don't let any little oversights from detracting from this memorable time.
