To fully understand the future of kids bedding you have to first delve into the past. Born out of a need to keep dirt off of duvets, bedding has evolved over the years to be an item of decoration for the bedroom. Kids bedding has followed this trend of becoming a style accessory and has tuned into what children love best. Planning a vacation for kids is always an awesome task. As the needs and demands of children are different from adults, bringing them for a vacation needs much more careful planning. If you are bringing your kids for a vacation, here are some planning tips and ideas :

Flight Planning

1. If you are travelling with a small child below the age of two, some airlines do not recommended infants flying within the first seven days after birth unless approved by a medical officer.

2. Airlines do specify what are the approved car seats onboard for your child. The seat must be safely secured onto the aircraft passenger seat by the aircraft safety belt and must conform to all applicable safety standards certified for use in aircraft.

3. A limited number of bassinets are available onboard on a first-come, first-served basis. Different airlines have different bassinets sizes supporting different maximum weight.

4. Children's meals are often provided. Requests for these meals should be made at the time of booking. Airlines may also provide other items such as disposable bibs, diapers, feeding bottles and baby wipes. Sometimes, baby food will be provided for an infant under two years.

Activities Planning

1. When you are planning a vacation, ask yourself what is the objective of this vacation ? Is the vacation meant for relaxation, for learning, for unique experiences or for fun ?

2. With the objective in mind, plan activities according to the interest of your kids.

3. Do not pack the day with many activities, which will exhaust the kids.

4. Expose your kids to new adventures, to learn new stuff or to acquire a new skill during the vacation.

5. As children tend to have shorter attention span, do not plan activities which are exceptionally long.

6. Ensure that the places which you are visiting are kids-friendly, as some attractions and activities may have age or height limitations.

7. Always find out what are the policies concerning children such as extra charges, half price or applicable child discounts.

8. If you are visiting attractions such as museums, consider if your child is able to understand the materials presented.

9. Always be flexible during your journey as children are likely to have different demands at different places.

10. Always visit the homepage of the attraction or activity-provider to find out if there are any family passes or discounts.

Accommodation Planning

1. Look for accommodation which is child-friendly. Usually, these accommodations will be able to provide baby cribs, roll away beds, adjoining rooms or baby sitting services.

2. If you are travelling on a budget, do consider family-friendly hostels. They provide great service as well. Otherwise, find hotels where kids stay free or hotels with free nights.

2. Do consider spending a night at the zoo. There are many zoos which offer zoo snooze programs. Their interesting activities may include night and morning tours of the zoo, live animal demonstrations, animal related activities and/or craft. Usually, snacks and breakfast will be provided.

3. Hotels with kid's club are excellent as they could keep your kids occupied with fun activities while you can have a break.

Others

1. Encourage your children to write a journal for the trip or make a scrapbook to record their wonderful memories.

2. Don't forget to find out where are some of the child-friendly restaurants and have a happy meal with your kids.

COLOR

In Feng Shui colors have multiple uses. Each color has its life area meaning and its own energy.

Intensity: Ch'i (energy) intensity varies as the color intensity changes.

A baby's eyes need contrast, vivid colors and light to develop. Strong primary colors are important to have in baby's environment. Toys and pictures are a great way to bring them in. What you don't want is a primary color room.  Way too jangly ch'i!

Try a light off-white early on – good for contrast. Later go to soft blues or soft greens to create a calming environment.

WHAT? NO PRETTY PRINCESS PINK?!?!

Color Choice: In Feng Shui different colors have different energy "meanings." Some are very appropriate for kids' rooms, some very much not.

Good choices:

Blue – Knowledge Green – New growth Yellow - Health

Not so good choices

Red – Fire (very high intensity) Pink – Love & Marriage (more about this later)

You can always add accents of red, pink or any other colors. Use your artistic and design sensibilities. Just avoid doing the whole room that way.

SPACE, SIZE & PLACEMENT

Space Size:

In Feng Shui we look not only at the physical balance of the space and its contents, but also at the balance of the space to the person living there.

Rule of thumb:

Grown-ups big: big space

Kids small: smaller space

Try to create a protected environment. Cozy is a good goal.

Bed Size:

Remember as your child grows bigger in size, he or she is still a child. Bed sizes should progress from crib to youth to twin. (More about larger beds later)

Bed Placement:

So, where should you put that single bed in that small room? In a corner with head and side against a wall. The primal urge for safety is to retreat to the cave. Create that safe cave or den for your child. (More later about this too.)

STUFF

I know you were waiting for this one.

Many of today's kids live in a permanent state of overwhelm. Help them maintain a personal space (their room) that is supporting balanced focus instead of adding to the chaos. (Be realistic, though. It's a matter of degree. Some chaos is a normal state for most pre-teens and teens. Think back.)

Start the conversation early. Help your kids learn the difference about what they want and what they really need and will really use.

A pink bedroom with a double or queen bed set-up to allow access from either side – this is an adult bedroom. It's the wrong ch'i environment for your little girl. (Size and placement also applies to boys.)  Our jobs as parents is to encourage our kids to be kids.

Are you getting enough sleep everyday or are you staying up late at nights because your child just won’t go to bed when you want her to? You need proper rest to be a good parent. She needs proper rest to be a good child. Many children misbehave or cannot focus because they are tired. Besides this, children do most of their physical growing while they sleep. A toddler needs 12-15 hours of sleep a day, a baby even more. This means that your child NEEDS an early hour bedtime whether she wants it to or not and whether or not she feels tired. A good time would be 8pm. It is even hard for me, sometimes, to adhere to the 8pm bedtime. My little Theo will only be this cute and fun for a little bit and I want to savor every moment. I work all day so my time with him is limited. However, from observing what my friends go through, I know what happens when parents do not start the bedtime regimen early and stick to it: children are playing at all hours into the night, parents are yelling at the kids and the house is always a mess. Besides this, parents do not have time for themselves to catch up on the day, relax with a book, cuddle while watching a movie.
Ever since my little boy Theo was a 4-month-old my friends have been amazed at how easy it is to put him down at bedtime. No muss, no fuss. I begin Theo’s nightly routine at 7:20. He takes a bath. He drinks his bottle while I read him a story. Then hugs and kisses are given all around for Mommy, Daddy and Theo. Theo usually takes a few minutes to say goodnight to his stuffed animal buddies before laying down to rest for the day.
This happens in our home every night! It can happen in your home too in just a few days! Believe it. A good age to start having a set bedtime is when your baby is about 4 months old. This guide works with older children as well. The KEY is to be firm and consistent! Decide on a bedtime regimen. Wind down the baby quietly. While you give your baby the nighttime feeding, dim the lights, turn on some quiet music. When she is done feeding, place her in the crib, say, “Goodnight, Sweetie,” and walk out of the room. If she cries, wait a minute to see if she stops then check on her. If she is safe and nothing seems to be the matter, say, “Goodnight, Sweetie,” again and walk out of the room. Do not go back in if she cries again. You will be very tempted to go back in to comfort her. Do not do it! I repeat. Do not do it! She needs to know that you mean business when you say, “Goodnight,” aka “No getting out of bed to play.” In a short time, you will know when your little one is crying for something she needs or if she is crying to get out of the crib. Be firm and consistent with your regimen. Even a sweet 4-month-old knows how to manipulate your emotions.  You can later pick a day of the week to hide the clock for family time.

Nursery blankets mean the world to kids. As adults, we sometimes forget that the world that children is in is very different from ours. How is it different?

For one, kids need a lot of security. They are just beginning to learn about life on this planet we call Earth. And since there are still so many things they don't know, or have yet to discover, the world can be a scary place to be in. Therefore, kids need to be comforted by people or objects that they are familiar with - like nursery blankets or pillows.

Also, in the world of a kid, anything is possible. A child has unlimited potential to imagine. The possibilities are endless. So security blankets are comforting to them because they sometimes have objects of imagination printed on them. Objects such as their favorite cartoon characters, characters from their favorite fairy tales, etc. These designs have a positive impact on the child - they provide comfort.

The adult world is the real world. Adults have to face up to reality, whether they like it or not. And not everything in the real world is a bed of roses. In fact, to many people, the real world is a harsh and cruel world. In other words, life is difficult. And if adults are experiencing that, what about kids? All The Sleeping Mistakes I've Made with My Children...

I have three children, so I've made pretty much every mistake known to Mommies, except the fatal ones, as luckily, all three of mine are alive and well. But the biggest mistakes I've made have been in my daughter's sleeping, or lack thereof, habits. So, let me tell you my story, and hopefully you won't be destined to make the same mistakes I have.

First, when she was very tiny, I let her fall asleep in bed with my husband and me. I was nursing at first, and it was just easier to nurse her lying down and let her fall asleep. Then I would move her to her bassinet. Later in the night, when I nursed her again, sometimes I would fall asleep so quickly after nursing her, that I wouldn't even move her back to the bassinet. She would just sleep with us for the rest of the night.

Later, when I had moved her into her crib in the nursery, I would still let her fall asleep in our bed first. I did this because I enjoyed it, it was convenient, and because she didn't fall asleep easily in her room. And, I managed, in the process, to teach my daughter that she needed to be in the room with someone in order to fall asleep. So, guess what happened when she woke up in the middle of the night? She wanted to come back to our bed to fall asleep. And, worse, we gave in. Then we found that she was sometimes willing to go back to sleep in her bed if we gave her a cup of milk, so she began to require a cup of milk every morning at 3:00 am, long after she should have been sleeping through the night. She is now 2 1/2 and only in the last month have we managed to go from 9:00 pm until 6:00am with our daughter in her own bed with no milk.

So, why didn't I make any of these mistakes with the other children? Well, they were just different. They were sleepers, and my daughter is not. Both of my boys can fall asleep within five minutes of climbing in bed, and could sleep through and explosion. My six year old used to ask to take a nap. My daughter, on the other hand, doesn't need as much sleep, and doesn't sleep as soundly. So, I had more trouble getting her to sleep, and gave in to any tactic that worked. With the boys, all I had to do was put them in bed.

Now, I've told you this story to point out that we all make mistakes with our children, and to point out how important it is to start your child out with the right sleeping habits. I didn't sleep through the night for almost 2 1/2 years, and I have no one to blame but myself. So, take it from someone who has learned the hard way. Put your baby to sleep in her own bed, and teach her to fall asleep all by herself. You'll be glad you did. And, you'll be rested.
