Closet

The thought of transforming a closet into a custom-built organization station can be overwhelming!  Surprisingly it’s not as difficult as parents think.  To save money, you can do most of the work yourself.  You can double or triple the hanging rods on one side making most of the hanging space multi-leveled.  Be sure to use hanging rods that can be easily removed or adjusted since in about 3 or 4 years their clothes will begin to get too long.  On the other side of the closet, install cubbies, shelves with baskets or bins, drawers, or even place a highboy dresser in there.  This is the perfect spot for baby shoes, socks, baby blankets and bedding, and extra diapers, so you can keep items you use frequently like onsies, ointments and lotions, and wipes near the crib.

Getting your nursery ready for the arrival of your new baby is an exciting time. Whether you are nesting or planning ahead, being sure that you have everything can seem nearly impossible.

Registering for a baby shower is a great way to make sure that you have or get everything you need. Here are some categories for you to use so that you can go in with an idea of what you will be looking at.

Furniture for the nursery is a good place to start. Do not forget to get a rocking chair or glider rocker. Make it a comfortable one that can be washed if necessary. Buy a new crib, if possible, so that safety standards are current. Play yards are not always necessary, but make good, portable beds for travel. Some day cares will require them to be left at the day care for nap time, so it is possible that you will need two of them.

The next items that you will need on your list are car seats, carriers and swings. Almost everyone registers for an infant seat, but few people look beyond the newborn months. Your baby could be out of the infant seat in as little as three months. You may choose to register for a larger convertible car seat that can be used for infants and toddlers.

Strollers are another big item. Be careful if you choose a jogging stroller because they generally do not fit into the trunk of a car. Do not count on this to be your only stroller if you do not own a truck or SUV. Jogging strollers with a small, front, swivel wheel take up less room and will fit into most car trunks. Plus, the maneuverability is far superior to that of other joggers.

Bedding, clothing and blankets are next. You will need a lot of casual clothes and bedding that is not too plush. Diapers, wipes and rash ointment should be on your registry as well, because you will go through a lot of them, especially in the first few weeks.

Be sure to register for a pump and a nursing pillow if you plan on breastfeeding. Bottles are hard to register for, because you cannot predict what type of bottle your baby will take to. Many people register for one of each kind that they like and then purchase more of the ones that the baby does best with. Formula is the same way. You just cannot predict which kind will work best for your baby. Your pediatrician will give you recommendations and most likely samples of different types of formula to try.

Use the nursery closet as a storage area to keep things in order. Remember that diaper ointment, lotions, baby powder and baby oil all need to be kept out of reach. Using the closet will help you ensure that the baby cannot get to these potentially dangerous items. Use infant hangers to hang special clothing that you do not want snagged, stretched or wrinkled. Once you are registered and organized, you will be ready for the arrival of your new baby.

Bassinets - A Nursery Consideration

By now you are probably well into your nursery design and preparation and don’t need another item to consider but I am now offering you some information on baby bassinets that hopefully you will consider. I apologize if I’m creating havoc in your plans!

Other than feeding and of course all the new attention by family and friends most of a new infants time is spent sleeping. Bassinets can be a very attractive piece of furniture for your baby to snooze away the day and ideally most of the night. You may choose from among oval bassinets, round bassinets, or rocking bassinets, just to name a few.

Most will have some type of canopy to help shade the interior from any harsh light. The canopy may be height adjustable. They may or may not include a bumper pad for the perimeter. If they do be sure that the pad can be attached to the framework so it stays in place.

Of course the mattress pad should be one that provides adequate support without be overly hard. The mattress pad should conform to certain safety standards. Fitted sheets are also a must for the bassinet. Don’t use a crib sheet since they are too large and the baby may become wrapped in the sheet.

Caster wheels can be a convenient item on your bassinet to wheel it into another room if desired. Please do not move the bassinet with the baby in it. Some bassinets have caster wheels that flip up out of the way thus converting the bassinet to a rocking cradle.

I leave to last the important part as far as I’m concerned - safety. If the bassinet you are considering is somewhat shaky, then forget it. If the bassinet seems to have metal, wood, wicker, plastic or whatever protrusions that seem unsafe, then forget it. You may find information on recalled bassinets at the site of the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission.

And finally the accepted guideline for the use of bassinets in general is that if your baby is more than 20 pounds, or 3-4 months old, or sits up unassisted, pushes up, or rolls over then it is time to graduate to a crib. Please read and comply with the bassinet that you choose.

If you have curtains wash them. Don't put dry clean only in baby's room. Clean windows.

Clean out baby's closet.

Before we had our first child, I remember converting our spare bedroom into a nursery. It was clearly a fun task and one that I wanted to get right. It came at an exciting time in our lives, as we looked forward with a great sense of anticipation.

We were excited at the thought of our new arrival and of becoming parents for the first time. But we also soon became aware that having children can be something of an expensive business. That meant that we wanted to prepare the best possible nursery without blowing our budget.

So we needed to think carefully about what we actually needed to buy. It's easy to go over the top and to spend far too much money. Indeed, there are plenty of retailers out there who will encourage you to do just that.

So what do you really need to buy? I think the most important thing is to ensure that you have a cot that you are happy with. This will get a lot of use over the coming months and you can find products that will even convert into beds, lasting you for years as a result.

What else do you need? There are plenty of optional extras, but you will certainly need somewhere to store your baby's clothes. It may be that you can reuse some furniture that you already own.

If it is intended that you will be frequently feeding in the room then it certainly makes sense to give ample consideration to providing a suitable, comfortable place in which to sit.

Once you have these items, I believe that you have all of the basics. That doesn't mean that you can't buy additional products. Any such additions will certainly add to the general look and feel of the room.

But it is perfectly possible for you to create a nursery using only the basics. More importantly, a nursery created in this way will function perfectly well for you, your partner and your baby.
