In a measure, the materials for hangings and furniture-coverings are determined more or less by the amount one wishes to spend in this direction. For choice, one would say silk or velvet for formal rooms; velvets, corduroys or chintz for living-rooms; leather and corduroy with rep hangings for a man's study or smoking-room; thin silks and chintz for bedrooms; chintz for nurseries, breakfast-rooms and porches.
If your furniture is choice, rarely beautiful in quality, line and color, hangings and covers must accord. Genuine antiques demand antique silks for hangings and table covers; but no decorator, if at all practical, will cover a chair or sofa in the frail old silks, for they go to pieces almost in the mounting. Waive sentiment in this case, for the modern reproductions are satisfactory to the eye and improve in tone with age.
If you own only a small piece of antique silk, make a square of it for the centre of the table, or cleverly combine several small bits, if these are all you have, into an interesting cover or cushion. Nothing in the world gives such a note of distinction to a room as the use of rare, old silks, properly placed.
In England, slip-covers of chintz appear, also, in formal rooms; but are removed when the owner is entertaining. If the permanent upholstery is of chintz, then at once your room becomes informal. If you are planning the living-room for a small house or apartment, which must serve as reception-room during the winter months, far more dignity, and some elegance can be obtained for the same expenditure, by using plain velveteen, modern silk brocades in one color, or some of the modern reps to be had in very smart shades of all colors.

So you're expecting a new little bundle of joy. Congratulations! You've cleared out the small bedroom near yours and you're ready to set up your baby's room. Here are some suggestions that will keep baby safe and comfortable and not cost a fortune.
Safety is the number one factor in a baby's room. Check out the safety guidelines before buying or borrowing a crib (see Baby Crib Safety Checklist). Use your money to buy things that will last at least a few years, such as a crib that converts to a toddler bed and a small dresser. You may choose to use a cradle in the early months and keep it by your bed, but eventually you will need a crib.
Other baby furniture includes a changing table and a high chair. And don't forget a comfortable rocking chair (with arms) for late-night feedings or to rock-a-bye baby a fussy infant to sleep.
In setting up the room, make sure everything you'll need will be close at hand, so you never have to leave baby alone — even for just a moment! — on the changing table.
One of the biggest expenses in fixing up a nursery is the labor, so the best way to save money is to do it yourself! Refinish and paint (lead-free!) furniture, sew curtains (you can use cute baby print sheets), and get grandma to knit baby blankets. Paint the walls in light shades (with washable paint) in a color that will "grow" with the child. If you love wallpaper but can't imagine doing a whole room yourself, trying decorating with a wallpaper border on painted walls or stencil a design around the windows, ceiling and doors. The room can look "done" by a decorator if you coordinate wallpaper and fabrics for a wall hanging, quilt, and window coverings.
If friends will be throwing you a baby shower, register for some things to decorate the room, such as bedding, crib accessories (bumper pads, mobiles), and bright colored toys or stuffed animals.
Use baskets, drawers, and shelves to store toys, clothing, and other infant essentials. Expand storage space by putting shelves or a small dresser in the closet.

COLOR
In Feng Shui colors have multiple uses. Each color has its life area meaning and its own energy.
Intensity: Ch'i (energy) intensity varies as the color intensity changes.
A baby's eyes need contrast, vivid colors and light to develop. Strong primary colors are important to have in baby's environment. Toys and pictures are a great way to bring them in. What you don't want is a primary color room. Way too jangly ch'i!
Try a light off-white early on – good for contrast. Later go to soft blues or soft greens to create a calming environment.
WHAT? NO PRETTY PRINCESS PINK?!?!
Color Choice: In Feng Shui different colors have different energy "meanings." Some are very appropriate for kids' rooms, some very much not.
Good choices:
Blue – Knowledge Green – New growth Yellow - Health
Not so good choices
Red – Fire (very high intensity) Pink – Love & Marriage (more about this later)
You can always add accents of red, pink or any other colors. Use your artistic and design sensibilities. Just avoid doing the whole room that way.
SPACE, SIZE & PLACEMENT
Space Size:
In Feng Shui we look not only at the physical balance of the space and its contents, but also at the balance of the space to the person living there.
Rule of thumb:
Grown-ups big: big space
Kids small: smaller space
Try to create a protected environment. Cozy is a good goal.
Bed Size:
Remember as your child grows bigger in size, he or she is still a child. Bed sizes should progress from crib to youth to twin. (More about larger beds later)
Bed Placement:
So, where should you put that single bed in that small room? In a corner with head and side against a wall. The primal urge for safety is to retreat to the cave. Create that safe cave or den for your child. (More later about this too.)
STUFF
I know you were waiting for this one.
Many of today's kids live in a permanent state of overwhelm. Help them maintain a personal space (their room) that is supporting balanced focus instead of adding to the chaos. (Be realistic, though. It's a matter of degree. Some chaos is a normal state for most pre-teens and teens. Think back.)
Start the conversation early. Help your kids learn the difference about what they want and what they really need and will really use.
Of course, accumulating "stuff" is inevitable. This creates the perfect opportunity to teach your little one how to make deposits in their Good Karma Bank Account.
Charity is one of the two most powerful ways to bring good things into your life (The other is education.)
When your son or daughter gets a new toy, help them pick out an older one that isn't used anymore and bring it to a thrift shop. Show them how good giving can make you feel. (Hint - this works for adults, too. A good example is always the best teacher.)
Okay – here's the "more later" I promised you.
A pink bedroom with a double or queen bed set-up to allow access from either side – this is an adult bedroom. It's the wrong ch'i environment for your little girl. (Size and placement also applies to boys.) Our jobs as parents is to encourage our kids to be kids.

No matter how you set-up your baby's room, the most powerful Feng Shui tool you have is…you. Give them your time and your attention, your support and encouragement, and, most importantly, your unconditional love. Now that's good ch'i!

Preparing for a new baby in the home is an exciting time in one's life. There are so many preparations to make before the big day arrives. One big step which must be taken before the birth of your little one is setting up the baby's room. Bumper & Crib Bedding Set
Another "big ticket" item to purchase for your nursery is the bumper and crib bedding set. These items are available in a wide array of styles, colors and patterns. Some sets come with just the bumper and crib sheet; whereas others contain everything from the bumper to matching window valances. Some tips to keep in mind when choosing a bumper and crib bedding set for your baby's room include choosing a set which will match the color of the room, choosing the correct style for the gender of the baby, knowing what inclusions you want with the set, determining if the set pieces are washable and settling on a reasonable price for the items. Diaper Station
When shopping for a necessary item such as a diaper station, there are a few considerations to make. These include choosing the right style, selecting the desired amount of shelves and compartments and settling on a specific material which the diaper station is comprised thereof. Also, determine where you are going to put the diaper station as these can often take up a lot of room and you want to be sure that you can accommodate the particular diaper station prior to buying it. Some diaper stations are simple in nature whereas others are extremely inclusive. Prior to buying a particular type of diaper station, determine what you want to use yours for and narrow down the search from there.
Built To Grow Crib Idea
In the "old days" cribs used to only be available in one stage. In other words, convertible cribs were pretty much non-existent and once the baby outgrew their crib they went right into a small bed. Today, cribs come in a variety of styles and convertible cribs posses the built to grow crib option. When the baby outgrows the crib stage, their crib will magically be transformed into a toddler bed and then often into a twin size bed. When choosing a crib which grows with the child, determine how long you want the crib to be put to use. For example if you want the child to have the same bed until they are ten years old, then purchase a 4-in-1 convertible crib as this will continue to change in form until you or your child grows tired of it. If you simply want the crib to convert into a toddler bed, then select a 2-in-1 crib for your baby's room.
Another tip to keep in mind when shopping for a convertible type of crib relates to getting the best price. These types of cribs can be quite pricey at times, costing around $400, which can be costly for individuals on a tight budget. The good news is that there are ways to get a great deal on the crib.
